School of Education
UNC-Chapel Hill Chapel Hill, NC

UNC-CH School of Education wanted to provide the best education and learning experience for their students and the most effective teaching tools for their educators. Even before the pandemic drastically changed the face of education, UNC was encouraging their educators to think critically about implementing HyFlex (Hybrid/Flexible) methods. The challenge of engaging students had become more complicated, with increasing numbers of students joining the classroom remotely. Educators needed to equitably relate to both the in-person and remote students. KONTEK brought our expertise to the table and changed the game entirely with a custom implementation of AVoverIP.

The Variable was ready for a change. Success and rapid growth had forced the strategic marketing firm into several costly moves out of office spaces they had outgrown before their lease was up. They were looking for a partner who could help them realize their dream of a future-proof, technologically integrated, sleek, and creative-oriented space — all while staying on budget and on an accelerated timeline. Virtual Classroom
NC Central University School of Law Durham, NC

Law School education relies on a lively real-time dialog between teacher and students, with students called upon to explain and justify their reasoning in front of their peers. Traditional web conferencing tools, based on passive presentation of slide content to students, are ineffective at delivering the same classroom experience. When NCCU’s School of Law began to introduce distance education courses to better serve its students, it challenged us to create a realistic digital version of the traditional law school classroom that encouraged the kind of fast paced back-and-forth interaction that is unique to legal education.

Emergency Communications Center
Police Headquarters Building Durham, NC

When the City of Durham undertook the design and construction of its new $71.3 million police headquarters, the 911 emergency center quickly emerged as a technological centerpiece. Allied Health Veterans Hall
UNC-Wilmington Wilmington, NC

UNCW had specific goals for the quantity, quality, and functionality of the A/V technology in their new Allied Health Building, but they also needed to stay within a defined budget. In addition, they wanted a future-ready solution that would be viable for many years to come. The building includes 16 spacious lecture and lab instructional rooms, five active learning classrooms, 29 collaboration and conference spaces, and over 30 digital signage destinations. To ensure students had every opportunity to reach their full potential, each room required its own flexible A/V system that was easy to operate. Additionally, the A/V systems had to tie into the Distance Education control room for centralized management and lesson recording capabilities.

Maynard Children’s Hospital
Vidant Health System Greenville, NC

For children, hospitals are often framed with fear — a visit to one is usually anything but normal. During treatments a child must remain still for 15-30 minutes or longer while surrounded by massive medical equipment. It can be a nerve-racking, uncomfortable and scary experience. For the new James and Connie Maynard Children’s Hospital, Vidant Health envisioned a welcoming, child-friendly environment that would begin at the front door and extend into every corner, with features meant to calm, distract and reduce the anxiety of young patients. Vidant turned to KONTEK for a sensory-driven solution of lights, sound and visuals.

Simulation Center
Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine Lillington, NC

Campbell University’s School of Osteopathic Medicine (CUSOM) is North Carolina’s newest medical school and the only one based on osteopathic principles. Designed from the ground up to train students in the treatment of the whole person, CUSOM focuses on bringing health care to where it is needed most—the primary care specialties of family medicine, general internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology. Throughout the design process, Campbell’s dean and faculty emphasized the importance of medical simulation to the new school’s success—in particular the need for a sim facility with the size and throughput to serve a large student body, the flexibility to quickly adapt to new types of mannequins and simulation session designs, and the technical power to allow a small staff to monitor and control the entire facility from their desktops or mobile devices.
